Abhishek Agarwal asked:

At this juncture, you will have decided that you possess the skills necessary to be a great business manager. You may have read how you can lead large groups of employees. You may have found out that you will need to be great at getting people under you to do what needs to be done. If you have heard all of this and the job fits your personality, then you should be doing research on how you can be a business manager. When you are making plans for the career change, you will want to make sure that you know a lot about the field you are considering.

Some jobs look good but once you find out what they entail you will find they are not right for you. This is usually true in those coveted high paying careers. People usually get hung up on the prospect of making more money and they forget that they need to choose a career that is fun and interesting. If you don’t want to make this mistake you will want to get a hold of at least one educational essay on your chosen careers in business management.

When looking for those essays that describe you career of business management, try to make sure it isn’t by companies looking to hire new people because they tend to spin it towards their business. Consider that if it sounds far too good, then throw the essay in the trash. Don’t waste your time on pipe dreams, when what you need is the facts.

There may be a few great websites that will help you find information about working in those careers. You will want to try an essay about business management because the information will be unbiased.

Reading essays on careers on business management that has someone who may be bitter abut their current position or even their last one is just as bad as reading the one that is too much like an advertisement. If you look at the essay and it is unbiased you will know exactly what may happen in that kind of job.

Yes, you may see all the bad thing that could happen from the bitter person, but that only applies to the place he worked, making this essay totally useless.

project management careers

Kumar Manu asked:

All organizations use projects as the way to translate strategies into actions and objectives into realities. Many companies are project-intensive – they live and breathe project management because they are in that kind of business, such as construction, aerospace, engineering design, engineer-procure-construct (EPC), general contractors, consulting, software, and so on. For them, organizing around projects is a natural way of life as almost all senior staff have “come up through the ranks”, and top management understands what it takes to be successful in project work. On the other hand are less project-intensive organizations such as food, retailing and textiles. But even such companies have projects, e.g., setting up a new distribution depot or a new plant. Even in public sector, it is effective project management that translates politicians’ visions of new roads, schools and hospitals into gleaming new constructions that improve everyday life.

Realization of objectives is not easy, though; especially in today’s increasingly complex and high-stake world – richer technology, distributed / global / outsourced workgroups, culture differences due to inorganic growth, cost pressures, new services and products, mass customization needs for demanding customers, compressed time-to-market, increasing market volumes and stricter regulatory requirements. Numerous studies and observations have shown that strong business growth or other ambitious endeavors frequently bring the following risks in deployment of strategies to manage the endeavors:

- Delays due to ineffective project planning, monitoring, coordination, risk-management and follow-through

- Poor realization of financial goals due to ineffective scope management and staff utilization / accountability

- Customer dissatisfaction due to lack of responsiveness, communications and stakeholder management

Thus, the key for most organizations to remain competitive in a high-growth and fast-changing environment is strong delivery capability made possible by uniform and effective processes, structure, and discipline of planning and monitoring initiatives that translate strategy into reality.

Project Management is a competency that leaders can use in their organizations to handle increasing complexity with higher success rates and acceptance, and lower uncertainty and costs. Following are just a few examples of the organizational inefficiencies that pose the above-mentioned risks, but can be effectively handled through use of the Project Management competency:

- Schedules managed in silos and dependencies are not integrated.

- Delays in one area not communicated to a dependent area, so resources not allocated efficiently.

- Schedules having short-term forecast range. Long-term planning at the activity-level non-existent.

- Schedules not identifying true critical paths and not including non-working time and defect estimates.

- Many communication channels informal, and therefore information not documented and communicated to all appropriate stakeholders in a timely manner.

- Responsibility for decision-making not clearly defined (decisions affecting shifting priorities or resources, changing dates, etc.).

- Lack of proactive risk identification and management.

- Inadequate reporting – lack of visibility / insight into the true status of the projects.

- Frequently forgotten or delayed activities and decisions

The art of managing projects is about having consistency in achieving stated objectives within limits of time, budget, and stakeholders’ satisfaction, by directing and coordinating human and material resources. Project Management is a way of life for enhanced collaboration, governance, execution-discipline, responsiveness, and alignment of organizational elements and procedures with features of products and operations. Project Management skills are quite different from technical design, engineering or construction skills usually associated with most projects, and cover aspects outside of the scope of these technical areas that have to be well managed, if the project objectives are to be met. Project Management also differs from traditional management in that it brings in cross-functional collaboration, governance, execution-discipline, responsiveness, and alignment of organizational elements and procedures with features of end-products of projects. It can help leaders bring in agility in innovation, growth and response to changes in the external environment.

Applying effective Project Management for deployment of strategy and goals can thus provide organizations the following advantages:

- Business advantage through timely achievement of goals, optimal resource utilization and information based decision making

- Competitive advantage through workforce energized by culture of execution and collaboration and customer satisfied by getting the “right” results reliably

Project Management can also bring in some tangible benefits for individuals at various levels in organizations. For example, through project management:

- Executives get accurate and timely information so that they can make sound business decisions and make course corrections quickly so they can maintain a competitive edge.

- People who execute understand their roles and responsibilities and how their work relates to the bigger picture. Minimization of conflicts and confusions through effective communications increases productivity and enthusiasm.

It can be concluded that project management as a management discipline, individual competency and organizational culture underpins much economic activity and is a critical source of multiple advantages. The specialized role of project management in bringing agility to organizations that want to innovate, whether it is for new products or new initiatives, cannot be ignored.

project management careers

Ray Myers, Jr., PMP asked:

Maybe you’ve always wanted to work for yourself or you are just looking for a change of occupation. Perhaps you were recently laid off and see freelance work as an opportunity to continue your career. Regardless of your reasons, there are 3 points every project manager should consider before engaging as a freelancer.

I recently heard someone on the radio talk about the 3 points. I’m sorry that I can’t recall his name, but he stated that, “Every business needs 3 things, someone to find the work, someone to mind the work, and someone to grind the work.”

These points were so important that I had to write them. Let’s take a moment and discuss each of the points to see how they apply to a freelance project manager.

Find the Work

Every business needs someone to find the work. Actually this role of finding the work is essentially a dual role with responsibilities in marketing and sales. As the marketing manager, this person is responsible to identify and describe the services to be provided by the freelancer, that is, to create any marketing collateral including brochures, advertizing, whitepapers, and fliers that will be used by the sales role to identify and secure new business.

In the sales role, this person will beat the streets looking for the next job. Typically this includes prospecting, qualifying, and selling the services to new or existing clients. Selling services can be time consuming; consider the time spent on phone calls, in-person meetings, writing proposals, responding to RFPs, and negotiating contracts. All of these activities are resource intensive, non-productive, and expensive when you consider your time, the cost to travel to client sites, and luncheon meetings.

Mind the Work

Every business needs someone to mind the work. This sounds like the business manager to me. In this role, the business manager is responsible to run the office, answer the phone, manage the contracts, invoice for work completed, manage accounts receivable, pay the office expenses, and make sure the payroll is ready on-time. In a small office, the business manager also creates and manages the business budgets, forecasts sales, manages contract milestones and deliveries.

Grind the Work

Every business needs someone to grind the work. This is the role that actually does work that will be invoiced to provide the funds required to run the business and make the payroll. It’s a full time job to perform the contracted services within schedule, under budget, while achieving the quality of service expected by the client.

A freelance project manager is a one-person show. The freelancer must fulfill all 3 roles to run a successful one-person business. The freelance project manager must somehow balance the needs to find and mind the work while still having time to grind out the work. The freelancer who focus on project delivery, but doesn’t make the time to look for the next contract will soon be out of business. Likewise, the freelancer who finds a job and focuses on delivery without remembering to invoice will also soon be out of business.

In summary, you may be a great project manager, but freelancing requires sales and business skills to run the business. Make sure you cover your bases before embarking on your new career.

project management careers

He could be a salaried employee of a construction company or engaged to manage a particular construction project.

The construction project manager has to be involved in the project from the beginning through to its completion. By employing his knowledge and expertise in terms of the efficient use of required resources, he has to ensure the achievement of predetermined objectives of cost, time, and quality. To make sure of these objectives, he has to decide which construction methods are appropriate for cost effective scheduling. He has to discuss architectural and engineering drawings with design engineers to effectively plan and harmonize every facet of the project. This may include preparation and use of complicated flow charts and bar charts, and various graphs for data representation. Nowadays, project managers use computers to analyze, conceptualize and implement plans and designs.

The construction project manager has to plan a logical, phase wise implementation of the project, assigning predetermined timeframes for the completion of each phase. He has to take all measures to see that the time frame is adhered to.

These days, there is a great demand for people with a good academic foundation in the field of construction management. Employers generally prefer a degree in construction science, with special focus on the management aspect. It is a four-year degree course offered by over 120 colleges in the country.

Coursework for a degree in construction science is very comprehensive. Some of the subjects covered would be engineering and architectural sciences, mathematics, statistics, computer science, project control and development, site planning, building design, construction methods, construction materials, value analysis, cost estimating, contract administration, building codes and standards and inspection procedures.

The American Institute of Constructors (AIC) and the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) also give certification after written examinations and verification of education. The AIC awards the Associate Constructor (AC) and Certified Professional Constructor (CPC) designations and the CMAA awards the Certified Construction Manager (CMM) designation.

There are better job prospects for candidates with work experience. The preference in the job market is for academically qualified people who have undergone internships and worked in the construction industry. They should be well versed in building technology.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers conducted a salary survey in July 2005 and found that candidates with a degree in construction management got an average annual salary figure of $42,923.

There are bright career prospects for a professionally qualified construction project manager. Practical work experience is of vital importance before a position of independent functioning will be offered. A few years experience at a junior-grade position on construction projects is a prerequisite required by most employers. The position would fetch a handsome salary package and commands a respectable position in society.

project management careers
